Last year, sometime, I stumbled across a review of the book called “The Decorated Page,” by Gwen Diehn. At the time I was looking for other books like Danny Gregory’s books or Dan Price’s book “How to Make a Journal,” and Gwen’s book looked a little older but the reviewer said great things about the book. So off to Amazon I went searching for the book. I found it and purchased it.
When the book initially came in I skimmed through it, but I’d just gotten Gina Rossi Armfield’s “The No Excuses Art Journaling,” book and was reading it so I put “The Decorated Page” on the book shelf with my other art/journaling books. I got busy, didn’t use either of the two books, though I did use Armfield’s “No Excuses Watercoloring” book to help me learn some techniques and improve my watercoloring ability.
After I got the new bookcase from my parents for my birthday in July I had to rearrange books… “The Decorated Page” book spoke to me…
“Burgess, when are you going to get around to doing this… You know that you want to leaf through my pages and read me… Use the information and create your own decorated pages… Come on…What are you waiting for???”
I leafed through the pages and got an idea for using a technique Gwen talked about in the book to create the cover for my Omni Journal.. I mentioned the “Decorated Page” on one of my YT videos… I wanted to delve further into the book. Make the book a project. And then the Destination Me group happened and I had even more of a reason to make the book a project…
After making the book a project I began reading it again. I started over and read it. Then panic set it. How to make the book an actual project for more than just me was daunting to say the least… I didn’t (and don’t) have all the supplies and I can’t afford to buy all the supplies I don’t have right now. I’ve never created a workshop like this… I need to go to a workshop like this…how do I set up an outline for the project when 1. Not everyone has the book, 2. sharing pictures from the book here or there when you put where they came from is okay, but I can’t infringe on copyright laws… and how to set it up without revealing too much of what is in the book…so people actually read the important parts of the book… (HEY! aren’t you a writer? A reader? You can do this…)
Then Jo Ann, from the group offered to help. And her suggestions were simple. I’d overanalyzed things. I’d made a mountain out of a molehill because I was in a panic because I didn’t want to screw it up…
One of Jo Ann’s suggestions was to read pp 27-29 and make a list of our favorite products, and be ready to discuss it at the end of the week…
I thought about it after going back to those pages and reading, and then realized…I could share the first supply list with the group and then we could make a list of our favorite supplies/products over the weekend, and then at the beginning of the week share our favorites and be ready to discuss supplies/products throughout the week… Jo Ann and I decided to do this to give everyone whose book hadn’t come in quite yet a chance to get their books in… We start officially on Monday, though we are taking this weekend to think about our favorite supplies/products and make a list, and then on Monday/Tuesday to share them so we can talk about supplies and products. *That’s this coming week, as in September 5/6.*
For week 2 Jo Ann and I are working on something else, as well as a few other things so that we have a tentative outline for the first few weeks of the project.

ON a side note… One of my favorite parts from the book so far is this part:
” In this kind of journal (she’s referring to what is called a “visual journal,” or a “marriage of form and content, of text or writing and visual expression”), the way a page looks is determined by the thoughts and reflections expressed on the page. A certain idea or image will seem to need a certain kind of layout or design, and particular materials will allow you to express yourself more profoundly. Each element, visual and verbal, informs the other, and turn informs your own understanding of the events, ideas, and reflections you record.”
A commonplace journal is a book that you put information in, where you compile knowledge, ideas, facts, quotes, anecdotes, observations, and information. It comes from what used to be known as commonplacing, or a commonplace book, which is “the act of collecting ideas and notes in a single place, ” thus, commonplacing. Many famous people such as Auden, C.S. Lewis, and others had Commonplace journals. They’ve come back into style, though I’m not quite sure of why they ever stopped being in style, or if maybe they just weren’t talked about much until the past few years.
I have always combined things like quotes, notes, facts, etc into my regular journals. I never knew there was a special journal for those things. But as you can see from my journal pages I combine a number of things onto my pages. From what I’ve found out, that is also called an omni-journal.
An omni-journal is a journal that contains multiple elements, or “of all things” (which is the definition of omni) so it would be a journal of all things: bullet journaling, art journaling, sketch your day, illustrate your day, scrapbook style journaling… And it could also include what you would put in a commonplace journal.
Since my journal is a combination of the primary definitions of a commonplace journal and an omni journal I was trying to think of a term that captured it without using the term Omni Journal, which is described here on this blog post and in Yippie Cahier’s YT video. I came up with the term Comni-Journal, but I still like “Omni-Journal” better.
My Omni-Journal has bits and pieces of everything in it, from my ideas, musings, knowledge, quotes, pictures, drawings, art, ephemera, to-do lists, observations, facts, anecdotes, plans, and more.
I’ve been experimenting with different styles of journaling, with different types of journals and different types of paper. The one thing I keep going back to is the combination of things, a little bit of everything goes into my journal pages. I can’t seem to help myself.
I’ve been asked about my Omni-Journal quite a bit lately. I’ve posted pictures that are from older journals, and from my current journal. I can see the difference. But if you look at what I did for this year’s mini-cation it’s quite a bit different. Not that one is necessarily better than the other, they’re just different. and I’m alright with different.

I can see how far my journaling has come now that I’m adding bits and pieces in. Today, in my Omni-Journal I wrote notes about this blog post. I’ve also written notes about YT videos I want to make, jotted down recipes, quotes, brain dumps, mind maps, etc. I have also done a bit of bullet journaling in my Omni-Journal. I don’t limit myself as to what I put in there. Don’t get me wrong, I have a journal specifically for brain dumping, an insert for collections and one for daily tasks, as well as a few for other specific things, but my Omni-Journal is the catch all for almost everything.

Over the course of several years, I’ve been refining my writing process, which includes ways to get inspired, stay motivated, and get shit done (productivity). Here are some of the things I’ve found that help me.
- Clean up your work area, as well as other areas that bother you and/or need cleaning. A 15 minute clean in your work area, a quick clean of your living areas. A 30 minute clean for important areas. Sometimes it’s hard to work when there is clutter, especially if the clutter distracts you. So taking fifteen minutes to clean really helps.
- Books that help inspire and motivate you to be creative have really helped me lately. Books like “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron, or the one I’m working on right now, “Finding Water,” also by Julia Cameron. Another book that’s extremely helpful with productivity is “Getting Things Done” by David Allen.
- Morning Pages are a great way to start your day. They help with clarity, are a great tool to get you in the mood to write, and are overall a great way to put those negative things that are rolling around in your brain down and then let them go–after a while you’ll see that what you write is less negative and more positive.
- Music. Music is a great way to help you get in the mood to be creative, to write, clean, create (art, etc) and to keep you motivated. I often listen to classic rock while I clean, instrumental music or Rainymoods.com when I’m writing, and various kinds of music when I’m creating art.
- An artist date. An artist date, as defined by Julia Cameron, is a solo adventure, that includes something fun, playful and are aimed at romancing or wooing our artist within. I like going for a walk in a park, swinging on a swing at a playground, going to for a cup of coffee and reading or writing or drawing, as well as going to lunch by myself and taking a book along with me. Most of my artist dates include coffee and a book or notebook and/or my camera.
- Candles, Incense…I use these things to help get me in the mood to write, to help cleanse my work area of any negativity, and because they smell good.
- Journal. I often write a few lines down here and there about what I want to do, as well as use my bullet journal to make a list of tasks for the day, week, month. I jot down projects, and then break them down so that I know what I should start with, as well as making sure that I have smaller goals to start with (which helps me feel better, more positive and less fearful–less self-doubt).
- Vision board. This can be a physical vision board, one on Pinterest, in your journal using collage, or whatever works for you.
- Read a book for fun. I often take a break when I feel a bit burned out with writing and read for fun. I now have a goal to read for at least 30 minutes each day just for fun, not for homework or for “working on my self,” but for FUN!
- Don’t compare yourself to others.
- Space for Writing/creating Art/etc. Whether it’s a corner somewhere, or an actual room, having your own space, a space that is for your creativity helps.
- Limit Distractions. Block out a certain amount of time that is just for writing. That means no Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google searching, etc. You and the page (and my cup of coffee or glass of wine.)
- Get dressed. Get out of those pajamas, those sweatpants, and get dressed. It doesn’t have to be “dress” clothes, but it does need to at least something that you’d wear to the grocery store, to the craft store, the bookstore… It’s a mindset thing. I’m dressed and now I’m ready to go to work.
- Writing buddies, or “Co-conspirators” as Ms. Cameron calls them. Find others with like interests so you can talk about those interests. For me it’s the #writestuff community, #writetube, FB…I have quite a few writer buddies and it really does help knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles (whether it’s with procrastination, self-doubt, editing woe’s, or trying to figure out whether your book should be in 1st or 3rd POV).
- (and last but not least) Schedule. This has been the hardest for me, yet it really is one of the top things I should be doing, should stick to so that I’d be more productive. I know this. I do, but the struggle has been real y’all. I know that I should block out specific chunks of time for writing, for art, for… and cut the distractions, and Just Write, but honestly, outside forces like Mr. Rockstar’s crazy schedule, which changes at the end of this week finally (he goes back to having a regular schedule instead of rotating shifts), or family, or things that happen, or staying up too late because I had insomnia or was in pain and then I don’t wake up until mid-day (or later)… But today is the start of brand new week, and last week I did better than the week before, and this week I’ll do even better than last week, and before long I should be back into my routine.
One last thing, if you’re striving for perfection then you’re bound to be disappointed, so instead of striving for perfection, especially with that first draft, remember this:

I’m on my second week of working through the exercises in “The Right to Write” by Julia Cameron and I have to say that it is actually helping my writing in a variety of ways. I’m still doing the Morning Pages, which I learned about in “The Artist’s Way,” and I’m also art journaling (or better known as illustrate your life, sketch your life, with an added bit of “Smashbook” style…), and I’ve been inspired to create more in general.
I am doing more creative things on a daily basis. (Part of that is because I’m now using a bullet journal and that has helped tremendously.) I have changed a few of the exercises to fit things for me. Instead of postcards, I sent an email, a letter, a phone call, a message.
I’ve also found that my morning pages are easier to do, better. I started the morning pages with “The Artist’s Way,” but they’ve actually improved since starting this book.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that for the past few weeks I’ve noticed, because I’m now paying more attention to things (thanks to the Artist’s Way), that similar themes keep popping up. Coincidence? I’m not sure that I believein coincidence–I’m going to call it synchronicity.
Themes like accountability, creativity, time-management, organization, self-confidence, believing in yourself, having a shitty first draft is okay, how important it is to have goals and to reach for your dreams…getting fit, being healthy, self care.
Since I’ve been reading Julia Cameron’s “The Artist’s Way,” I’ve been paying more attention to things like synchronicity, especially when it pertains to creativity, life, living a creative life, self-care, writing, art…It took me quite a few weeks to realize what was taking place in my life. The art of being present, in the moment.
I’ve been trying since last year to get organized in a way that allows me to stay organized. I’m a creative clutter kind of person. While I am working on things my desk is usually littered with things: washi-tape, pens, markers, paint brushes, glue-sticks, stickers, scissors, ruler, a cup of coffee, journals, a book (or three), hand lotion, fountain pen ink…. I have tried various planners, from ring bound, bound, TN (Traveler’s Notebook) inserts, spiral bound, to DIY. I’ve also tried verious journal techniques. The thing that seems to work the best for me is what is called an “omni-journal,” along with my Hobonichi.
I am now using my Hobonichi for my bullet journaling, as well as a small bit of “sketch/illustrate” your life journaling. And I’m using my Seven Seas Crossfield as my omni-journal, which houses my journaling, more in depth sketch/illustrate your life journaling, alond with my bullet journal collections and a few spreads. Both of these journals are in my Jonelifish A5 trifold (that is called Hans after Hans Christian Anderson), and my Jonelifish A5 bifold, which I use as my writer’s bible, is called Shakespeare. I am still using the Leuchttrum Master for my writing bullet journal (I’ll have a new one for each novel).
So why would I be talking about synchronicity when it comes to organization, planning, journaling, and the like? Yesterday morning my daughter called me. She needed some peace and quiet because she had a number of things she needed to do, like apply for jobs, apply for unemployment (the company she was working for had a massive layoff), redo her resume, and she said she wanted to start bullet journaling. What? I had been thinking about how bullet journaling might help her for the past few weeks but had yet to mention it.

Can you believe that it’s almost the middle of March? I can’t, yet at the same time I can believe how quickly 2016 is passing–at least the spring fever and Camp Nanowrimo fever has taken over. I wanted to finish my outline. I wanted to make it better. I wanted to be this outlining queen so that I could finish my novel. Finally finish my novel.
And yet, after a conversation with my daughter about writing I realized something important–I am not a pantser or a plotter. I’m not a gardener or an architect. I’m what people often call an astronaut (though I’m not quite sure of why exactly, or a plotster, or a loose outliner. Does it matter whether or not I pants or plot my novel? To some it seems to, and yet it’s my novel to write and I should be writing it in the best way that I am able to, in a way that brings out the best of my talent.
As much as I would love to have an elaborate, finely detailed outline so that I didn’t have to second guess myself while I’m writing, the best way for me to write is to just write.
I’ve also given a great deal of thought to what I want to do with my website/this blog. And how serious I want to get with it. It’s past time I took it more seriously. I’m committed to writing. To journaling and my art. To “branding” myself in a positive way. To bettering the quality of my videos on YT. The only things (social media) I’m not real serious about are Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. Perhaps when I get a better smart phone I’ll do more stuff with Instagram. Or when I figure out some kind of app for my desktop that works well in allowing me to put pictures from my actual camera into IG. I don’t want to spend anymore time than I already do on social media, and in order to do that stuff, or at least seriously, I’d have less time to do all the stuff I already do (and I don’t always have enough time now).
Tomorrow (well today now since it’s after midnight) I’ll be working on my novel and my art journal pages (my omni-journal), as well as my morning pages (first thing), and I’ll be working on some purging of clothes and shoes. Not to mention cleaning and cooking, going to the DMV for my son’s car, and going to look at a truck with Mr. Rockstar. And then I’ll be picking up my grandson from daycare, then my son from work, and then going home to finish putting dinner together….and that’s not including the dishes, spending time with my grandson, giving him a bath…Is there really enough time to be Tweeting, to be posting pics on IG, to be putting stuff on Tumblr? I don’t think so, at least not for me.
